Local SEO is how contractors show up when someone nearby searches for their trade — and for most, it comes down to three things: a dialed-in Google Business Profile, a fast website that clearly names your services and service areas, and a steady stream of fresh reviews. Get those right and you land in the “map pack” at the top of local results, where the calls come from.

Here’s the checklist.

1. Start with your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile — the listing with your map pin, hours, and reviews — is the single biggest lever in local SEO. It often ranks above your website for local searches, so this is where to spend your first hour.

  • Claim it and fill out every field — no blanks.
  • Pick the most specific primary category (“Roofing contractor,” not just “Contractor”).
  • Add real photos of your work, your crew, and your trucks.
  • List your actual services and the areas you cover.
  • Keep it active — post updates and answer questions when they come in.

2. Make your website tell Google what you do and where

Google can only rank you for what it understands. A vague one-page site gives it nothing to work with.

  • Name your services in plain language on real pages — a roofer needs a page that actually says “roofing.”
  • Create a page for each area you serve. A dedicated page per town ranks far better than one generic “we serve the whole region” line.
  • Put your business name, address, and phone number in the footer, identical on every page.
  • Make it fast and mobile-first — Google ranks slow sites lower, and nearly all local searches happen on a phone.

We build exactly this — trade-specific pages and local service-area pages — as part of getting you found online.

3. Get reviews, consistently

Review volume, recency, and rating are all major local-ranking signals — and they win the customer once you show up. The contractors buried at a dozen reviews aren’t unlucky; they just ask randomly instead of every time.

  • Ask every happy customer, right after the job.
  • Make it one tap with a direct review link.
  • Follow up with the ones who forget — that’s where most reviews actually come from.

(We break the whole system down in how contractors get more Google reviews.)

4. Keep your business info consistent everywhere

Your name, address, and phone should match exactly across your website, Google, Facebook, and any directory you’re listed in. Mismatches — an old number here, a different suite number there — confuse Google and quietly drag down your ranking.

5. Don’t forget to actually capture the calls

Ranking is only half the game. The calls your local SEO generates still have to turn into jobs — and if you’re on a roof or under a sink when the phone rings, that hard-won lead goes to voicemail and then to a competitor. Relay texts back every missed call and captures the lead, so the traffic you worked for doesn’t leak out the bottom.
